Son of A Witch

If you were spellbound by the story of Wicked the you are sure to fall in love with Son of A Witch the next book in Gregory Maguire's The Wicked Years series.

Follow Liir, a young man who is unsure of who he is or where he belongs in the world, as he searches across all of Oz for his step-sister Nor. After being abandoned by Dorothy Gale-the girl who killed the Wicked Witch of the West-Liir returned to his home at Kiamo Ko hoping to see if he can try and get information that would help him find his missing relative. But instead finds nothing but the wizened old woman called Nanny and Elphaba's troop of flying monkeys. So he sets off to find answers and on his way he joins the army, meets a princess disguised as an Elephant, spends some time in the terrible dungeons of Southstairs, rides a magic broom, and even kills off some military grade dragons.
Meanwhile in the story Liir also lies comatose and in the care of Candle, a supposedly mute Quadling girl with an unusual talent for music, within the mauntery of Saint Galinda. Once he wakes up the two of them flee from the mauntery and start off on their own adventure. All the while Liir questions himself, who his parents are, and if he will ever see Nor again.

This book was tough to get through but it was all worth it in the end. You really become connected to Liir throughout his journey as he tries to figure out who he is. My favorite part was when Liir was trapped within Southstairs but then he manages to escape by using Elphaba's old magic broom. Though there are times when this book is really confusing, the story splits between awake Liir and comatose Liir, there comes a time when the two stories come together and it all makes sense. Son of A Witch had an exciting plot line that holds you under its spell as soon as you start reading. While you could read this book on its own it is a part of a series so I highly recommend reading this book in its proper order. I read Wicked-the first book in the series-and I thought that it was amazing, however I have not read the other two books in the series which are A Lion Among Men and Out of Oz.

Enjoy! Happy Reading!!
