Into the Woods

Do you like burritos? Of course you do. Well here is a burrito of a movie.
As the movie begins we are introduced to all of the key players: Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack (Daniel Huttlestone), and the Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt). Each one of them has their own reasons for going into the woods; Red is going to granny's, Cinderella wants to go the king's festival, and Jack has to sell off his cow to get some money for food. But the biggest quest is taken on by the Baker and his wife; the two of them are wishing for a child but they are unable to have one because of a curse placed on their house by the local witch (Meryl Streep). The witch tells them that in order to break the spell they need to obtain: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the shoe as pure as gold and they have to get all of them in three nights. Though getting those four ingredients proves to be a lot harder than they expected. Meanwhile all of the other characters are in just as much trouble; Red and Granny get eaten by the Big Bad Wolf (Johnny Depp), Cinderella woos her Prince Charming but then doesn't know if she really wants to be a princess, and Jack? Well Jack is stealing from giants which leads to all sorts of trouble for everyone, namely the death of one giant and the rampage of the giant's wife. By the end of the movie all of the characters realize that real life is so much harder than a fairy tale and that it is definitely time to get out of the woods.

I thought this was a really funny movie! I had originally never heard of this but I found out that there is also a theatrical production of it which was also really good and I recommend it. This movie is definitely a great retelling of all of the classic fairy tales and I loved how the production staff threw in all of the little plot twists that weren't from the original stories, like Cinderella getting stuck on the stairs and the fling that Prince Charming and the Baker's wife have. I also love the casting job that they did, I think that is what really sold it for me. All of the actors were almost all type casted into the roles that they played which meant that they did an excellent job, especially Johnny Depp as the wolf his performance was done with his usual creepy flair. And the fact that they managed to cast people that were pretty good singers for the most part, which really makes the difference when filming a musical. I think my favorite part had to have been the song Agony, which was sung by the two princes. It was hilarious because they are both singing about going after their princesses and they are trying to compete with each other about the ridiculousness of their fair ladies. I don't know if I had a least favorite part just cause I thought the movie was great, however, some of the songs were really weird. Especially the song that the Big Bad Wolf sings to Red Riding Hood, Hello Little Girl, the original version is creepy as well but of course with Johnny Depp the creepiness gets escalated. I would recommend this movie to basically anybody, it's family friendly no swearing or inappropriateness, great for anybody that likes musicals and maybe even those who don't.

I give Into the Woods ***** 5 stars
