Pitch Perfect 2
OK so warning this might not be a very nicely worded review but I will try and keep it professional because someday God willing a possible employer will read this and want to hire me (please pray :)). Any way here goes.....
Well the sequel that we were sorta excited for (though not like Incredibles 2 or Finding Dory, but I digress) has arrived. The Barden Bellas have just come off of their third win in the national collegiate acapella competition and are preparing for their national tour. However one poor performance for the President's birthday leaves the Bellas' reputation yet again in shambles. Facing the dire punishment of never again holding auditions or performing again within the United States, the Bellas' propose that they compete in the World Acapella tournament and if they win they should be allowed to be reinstated. The only catch is that a U.S. team has never won the Worlds and the German team is undefeated. So joined by their newest recruit Emily Junk (Hailee Steinfield), Becca (Anna Kendrick), Chloe (Brittany Snow), Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), and the rest of the game begin relentlessly practicing to try and beat the German team Das Sound Machine. But it is not going easy for them, their small practice performance ends up a complete mess with flying props and a Bella getting caught on fire. Not to mention everyone being stressed out about graduation; especially Becca who is trying to break into the production industry with her internship. Can the Bellas' find their harmony once again during their team building retreat, get out of their slump and snag the win, plus do something never before done in acapella history: perform an original song?
Well let me just start by saying that I am not a fan of music based movies. They are all the same, the team goes through some horrible event that leaves them the underdog trying to come back and in the end they win big because who doesn't love an underdog story. That being said I did not like this movie, and not just because it was a typical music based movie. This movie was like sitting through a family gathering; crude, full of people you didn't necessarily need or want to see again, and never ending. While there were some interesting cameos: Snoop Dogg, Barak and Michelle Obama, and some of the Green Bay Packers (still not sure what was up with that...), there were reoccurring characters that just didn't need to be there. Making another appearance was: Bumper, the old guys acapella group, and the old leader of the Bellas. Now movies like this often tend to have side plots that help spice up the otherwise flavorless plot, but this one had so many that it was hard to keep up; Becca's internship, the Bumper and Amy romance, the Benji and Emily romance, and Emily's personal journey into the sisterhood of the Bellas. If it had just been the romances I would have been fine but then there was the internship and Emily's story which just seemed hastily thrown together. And for those who have seen the first movie you know that there were lots of sexist and sexualized jokes and they were fine to roll with since they were such a small part of the plot but this movie seemed like it was out to cram as many distasteful jokes as they could down your throat. From the blatant racism, sexism, sex, and an unnecessary and distasteful representation of the Iwo Jima statue this movie almost made me want to leave. Though there was some general comedy that made me laugh and the Bellas' final performance was pretty good it didn't make up for that and the lack luster ending. I don't really feel like recommending this movie to anybody but I guess if you really liked the first one and feel like watching the sequel then you go Glenn Coco. And I would not recommend you taking your young daughters to see it. Let's just hope that there is not a third movie in this series because I am sure that it would turn out badly.
