Straight Outta Compton

OK, so in all honesty I am probably in most peoples' opinions a pretty stereotypical white girl, true I don't drink Starbucks or wear UGG boots but I am still a white girl. That being said I am probably one of the last people that you would expect to go and see let alone like a movie as hardcore as Straight Outta Compton.

The year is 1986 and Compton, California is one of the centers for drugs, gangs, violence, and racism. But something is else is being put in motion, something that will change the face of rap music forever. And it all started when Andre Young (Dr. Dre)(played by Corey Hawkins) asks his buddy Eric Wright (Easy-E)(played by Jason Mitchell) to use some of his money to help produce a record. Together along with fellow artists O'Shea Jackson (Ice Cube)(played by O'Shea Jackson Jr.), Lorenzo Patterson (MC Ren)(played by Aldis Hodge), and Tracy Lynn Curry (The D.O.C.) (played by Marlon Yates Jr.) they form the N.W.A (Niggers with Attitude) and produce their first album "Ruthless." After a performance of their record they are approached by a manager who is prepared to make all of their dreams come true. But being a black rapper in the late 80's was not an easy career path; the police jump them under the suspicion of being gang members, and federal government tries to censor out their music. All the while tensions are growing between the civilians and the police of Los Angeles. The N.W.A doesn't give up though, they keep partying and keep performing the songs that the police don't want them to play. But just when they think they have hit their big break more things go awry and the group breaks up. Now it's up to Easy E to try and get the group back together for one more performance before the lights and the music fade for good.

Man this was an intense movie! I loved that it was so real, like it was not historical fiction, these were real people (played by actors but you know what I mean) and what they went through. The events that happened to them actually happened and that was what made this movie so moving because you know they aren't just adding in things like the police brutality for effect. I loved that the group members went through some sort of moral character development throughout the movie, at first they all started out as you would expect gangsters that could care less about the way they acted but by the end of the movie they all figured out where they wanted to be and started families of their own. This movie was full of different aspects there was humor, tears, anger, and happiness at seeing things work out for the guys.  I really liked this movie but I have to give out words of caution; this is not a movie for children or people who do not like excessive swearing, sex, and some violence because the movie is full of those things. But for those who can handle it Straight Outta Compton is a movie that I highly recommend going to see.
