Ramey Road Trip Day 4: So Many States So Little Time
Well folks we are finally heading out of Montana!! Today should be interesting since we have a lot to see. We packed up very early so that we could get to where we wanted to be.
Once we packed up we headed to our first stop for the day, Little Bighorn. This was a super cool place to stop and anyone who has never been needs to go. Little Bighorn is a huge cemetery commemorating the battle at Little Bighorn (go figure) this was a battlefield where several tribes of Native Americans fought American troops over their land and way of life. The Native Americans killed over 200 troops while they themselves lost only around 70. So there are a bunch of marble and stone tombstones placed in remembrance for the soldiers (a lot of which don't even have names). There is also a Native American memorial down a walking trail to remember the Native Americans who fought and died for their people. The whole experience was really cool and I hope I can go again someday.
Our next stop was to have breakfast at this little trading post type diner. I don't remember the exact name but I believe it was something like the Custer Trading Post? It's just a short drive away from Little Bighorn and it is a really cool place. There is a big gift shop that has a lot of Native American handmade stuff like blankets and carvings (I bought a dream catcher). Plus the food was really good I ate way too much.
After eating a lot of breakfast we headed out once again. This time we were heading out of state, to Wyoming to be precise. Our next tourist destination was to Devil's Tower to figure out what it all means. And let me just say this was a really neat stop, if you are ever in that area totally take the time to go. The tower is literally a giant pillar of sandstone standing by itself. Super neat!
Once the meaning of it all was figured out we kept driving. After several stops at rest areas to stretch and relieve ourselves (since attempting to pee in a moving vehicle is not always pleasant) we made it to our final destination (don't worry, not THAT final destination), Mount Rushmore.
Mount Rushmore was possibly the coolest thing of the whole day! I had never been so I was super excited and the park did not disappoint. Not only is there the mountain to look at and the trail that goes by it, there is also a big gift shop, a coffee shop, and a restaurant serving meals cafeteria style in a dining room decorated with all of the presidents' portraits on the walls. The food was alright, nothing to rave about but for the price it was good and you can get buffalo stuff which is always fun. Anyways we took the trail around the mountain, got our souvenirs, and then it was off to our newest KOA.
OK so KOAs are basically camp grounds and they are all over the U.S. but let me just say this was no ordinary camp ground; this was a resort! There was a play ground, trail rides, rentable ATVs, gold panning, waterslides, stores for wine tasting and ice cream, not to mention a huge gift shop, and to top it all of it was massive. I would have gotten lost without Jared's keen directional skills. But we had fun looking around, we got there pretty late so we couldn't do much but we looked through the stores and Jared got ice cream. Once that was done we had a fire and sat out a bit until we all finally went to bed. Good night everyone!
