Ramey Road Trip Day 17: Cattle Country or The Big Mis-steak

Today was a pretty interesting day. We spent a lot of it driving but had two pretty cool stops.

Our first stop was in Dallas, Texas so that we could go to the Sixth Floor Museum. This museum is dedicated to the life and death of President John F. Kennedy. It is a really neat museum and is fairly inexpensive, only like $16 for adults 18 and up, it also includes an audio guided tour through the place and if you listen to all of the extra recordings and watch the films the tour is about an hour long.

The museum itself is in the building where investigators suspect Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot the president. The sixth floor, where Oswald allegedly shot from, was set up with panels covered in pictures and information about different times in Kennedy’s life. There was even a sealed off section from the original crime scene, where the book boxes were set up in the sniper’s perch the way they were on the day of the assassination. The seventh floor had stuff on it as well, there were different photos of Kennedy and a lookout spot over the street where Kennedy got shot. My favorite part was the investigation section, it showed all of the research done into how exactly the shooting took place and the search for answers.

Once the tour was over we spent a little bit of time in the gift shop looking around before we left. After that we walked back to the car and got back on the road since the next place we were staying at was in New Mexico we had a lot of driving to do.

The drive was pretty uneventful until we got to Amarillo, Texas where we stopped for dinner. Since we were in Texas we had to go to a steak house at least once so we went to the Big Texas Steak Ranch, home of the 72oz. steak challenge.

I am honestly not sure how to feel about this restaurant. The food was good, especially the steak (as it should be in a steak house in Texas) but nothing stood out as amazing. The décor on the other hand was a little overbearing for my taste. There were a ton of taxidermy animal heads hanging from the walls, and fake cowhide table clothes on all the tables. They also sat us upstairs where it looked like they didn’t put a whole lot of effort into keeping it cleaned. One of the ceiling tiles was missing and the walls looked like they badly needed to be repainted. Though I still recommend going, if at least for the chance to say you went.

But we had a good time while there, we even got treated to a tableside concert by two musicians that were walking around. And we got to watch some poor guy try and complete the 72oz steak challenge; the challenge consists of a 72oz. steak, side salad, roll, baked potato, jalapeno pepper, and three shrimp and if you finish in an hour your meal is free (we also ran into that guy again in Albuquerque, New Mexico).

By the time we left we were all stuffed. I had an 8oz. steak, a side salad, and a baked potato. Jared had an 18oz steak, baked potato, side salad, and three shrimp. After leaving the restaurant we both realized we made a horrible mistake, we were so full all we could do was lie on the bed and try to relax.

By the time we got to our campground in New Mexico it was dark so we all hung out for a bit before going to sleep with our very full bellies.
