Ramey Road Trip Day 9: Out in the Mountains

Today we took a trip out into the wilderness of West Virginia to see what we could find. Before starting our day we all had breakfast in the house -- pancakes, bacon, and orange juice. Super yummy and a good way to start the day. After we had breakfast, we got everything together that we needed for the day and then loaded up into the truck (one of the aunts let us borrow her truck).

Our first stop for the day was a place called Hawkes Nest State Park. This was a pretty small little park but it is spread out, there are two different areas to go and look out over the river and the different bridges and there is even a tram ride where you can go down the cliff and look at everything. We tried to go on the tram but it was closed when we went so we are going to try again another day I think. But it was beautiful to go out and look at everything.

The next stop we made was to Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. This was an old mining town with old buildings and stuff still standing. The highlight of it was the trip into the mine. You load up onto a mine cart-train thing and the tour guide (who is a former miner) drives you into the mine and shows you different equipment that is used to mine coal. It was really neat seeing all of the old equipment and the tour guide we had (his name was Marvin) was really funny.

Once we got out of the tour we were going to walk around the different out buildings to see all of the houses and things that are set up around the coal mine. However, we got out of the mine and it was pouring down rain. Like not normal Washington rain, heavy, fat droplets falling from the sky for a good half an hour. It was the best thing in the world ( I love that kind of weather) and it was warm which mad it 100x better. But I of course was not having any of that stay under cover and wait nonsense, I wanted to go find the geocache that was supposedly nearby. So Jared, CC, and I all bought ponchos and went out to find it. Unfortunately we couldn't find it for some reason, but oh well the trackable can wait.

After we left the coal mine we went to grab lunch. So we all went to McDonald's, I did not get anything since McDonald's make me feel like dying (but I did get sweet tea which was super yummy). Then we headed to our next stop.

Our final stop was Babcock State Park. This park has an old mill that was used to make flour and such. The mill was super cool and the river that flows past it was beautiful. Mama Ramey wanted to buy some flour but by the time we made it back to the store they were closed.

After that we headed back to the house. When we got back dinner was already set out and ready to go. Let me tell you this food is going to kill me. There was mac and cheese (that I couldn't have), ham, baked potatoes, green beans, and brussel sprouts (didn't have those either). And then dessert was a gluten free cherry trifle type thing, it was so delicious I could have eaten the whole thing.

Once dinner had been consumed we all got our swimsuits on because we were going kayaking on the river. Jared, CC, Austin, and I all kayaked up the river a bit then came back. It is so pretty here, the forest looks like a jungle and it makes me think of Jurassic Park (seriously, I was expecting a pterodactyl to fly out over the water). We stayed out for a bit and then floated back, Jared and I floated together and talked a while. When we got back to the house everyone was talking out on the front porch so we sat out and joined them.

Now the night is done and since we have a very early morning tomorrow we will probably head to bed soon. So goodnight everyone, I will talk to you tomorrow!!
